Hanoi
The capital city of Vietnam, Hanoi is also the second largest city in Vietnam
with a total population of about 6.5 million. With more than 1000 years of
cultural history, Hanoi has got a lot of cultural and historic monuments for
visitors to view although some of it did not survived the wars. One of the most
famous architectural preservations is the Old Quarters in Hanoi where the
original street layouts and architecture of old Hanoi is still intact, with many
visitors choosing to stay at the numerous budget hotels for backpackers that
have sprung up in the old quarters. Consisting of about 36 streets in all, each
street in the Old Quarters have merchants that specialized in a certain trade
like jewelers, clothing, toys or silk traders. Hanoi is also known to be a city
of lakes with the most famous one being Hoan Kiem Lake, which is just beside the
Old Quarters. Other popular lakes where people like to spend their time lazing
around or where you can find dating couples are the more popular lakes like the
West Lake, Halais Lake and the Bay Mau Lake.
